Yoke shaft
A yoke shaft is a shaft with a fork-shaped end and a spline on the shaft body through which torque is transmitted. Ernst Grob cold rolls the spline on the C9 or A9 machines. Cold forming produces a work-hardened spline with high strength.
What is a yoke shaft?
A yoke shaft is a shaft that ends in a fork at one end and carries a spline on the shaft body. The fork-shaped end serves as a connecting element, while the spline transmits the torque. Yoke shafts are used in cardan shafts.
- Work hardening: During cold rolling, the material grain flow is not interrupted. This increases the strength and durability of the yoke shaft. (link to the explanation on the process page)
- Symmetrical flanks: The axial rolling motion of the tools allows both flanks to be loaded to the same degree.

Manufacturing at Ernst Grob
Ernst Grob cold rolls the splines of yoke shafts (external forming). The C9 or A9 cold rolling machines are used, typically without a torque motor. Common spline standards are DIN 5480, ISO 4156 and ANSI B92.1/.2. If the spline needs to extend very close to the yoke, it can be produced by intermittent forming in order to get closer to the yoke.
